Confident this should be on your bookshelf!
As an MSc cyber security student I did not expect to learn too much from a book targeted at beginners, but had heard great things about it and was interested in how it might develop my career. I can confidently say I learnt loads from it.Throughout the book, great care has been taken in providing many viewpoints and not making it US or UK focussed. For example, in the history section the inclusion of the Polish cryptography efforts that aided Turing’s work, is something that many skim over when providing such histories. Another thing I greatly appreciate is the emphasis on ethics and legality, but without judgement. There are ample opportunities to take even deeper dives into particular ideas through the many references listed in the notes section in the back of each chapter. The book takes you from an absolute beginner level of explaining the Caesar cipher and history of cyber security, then explains about legality and ethics, and then takes you through a detailed journey of various careers within cyber security up to the board level. The book gives advice on all of these and some case studies on particular areas such as Stuxnet and Wannacry, which are case studies you would expect professionals to know about.I really enjoyed this book. It opened my mind, made me think beyond my MSc and challenged my previous assumptions and thoughts around cyber security. It has challenged my thinking and given me some opportunities to read further in places that I may wish to look into for my dissertation and potential future career avenues.I highly recommend people to read at any level but especially for beginners.

Slight damage
Most of the book was ok but one corner bent not sure how it happened as driver handed package to me so didn’t go through the letterbox. Bit disappointing as it’s a gift and haven’t got time to replace

Simple, understandable & relatable- Jargon buster
I really enjoyed reading this book, as someone at the absolute start of their Cybersecurity career it really helped me understand a lot of the jargon! There is some really good case studies and I love how Dr Barker explains the huge industry that is cybersecurity. When I first thought about a career in IT I almost convinced my self that I’m not “cleaver enough” but this book has made me more determined to push myself to work in this industry!I highly recommend you read this if you are unsure or if you haven’t got a cyber background!

Good overview
Perfect for diving into cyber for the first time. I thought it was well edited, lots of real world examples to support to information. I was reading it on holiday to prepare for a new job expecting it to be a bit of a chore to read but i actually enjoyed it.

Well written, comprehensive and accessible guide to cyber security
Confident Cyber Security is an excellent and concise introduction to cyber security for anyone interested in the topic. Unlike many similar books it is not bogged down in technical detail and is written clearly without unnecessary jargon. Assuming little in the way of prior knowledge it covers the technical, physical and social threats to cyber security and provides practical guidance on how they can be addressed, illustrated throughout with real-life examples. Also covered is how to raise these issues in the workplace and how to pursue a career in cyber security for those interested. It concludes with a wonderfully entertaining chapter showing the diverse range of people and job roles in the industry. If you have any interest in cyber security I highly recommend this book.

A great introductory text to help take first steps
Devoured this book. Was expecting something technical. What I got was something that was insightful and easy to read. Case examples helped to break up the jargon. It is really meant as an introductory text for anyone considering putting this path. After I finished reading it I proceeded to buy something a bit more I depth. This book helped confirm that I have an interest in this field that I do want to continue down this path. For anyone debating a career in cyber security, this should help answer some questions

Jessica has written a very timely book here, and it’s packed full of useful information that anyone wishing to get into Cybersecurity can benefit from. Personally, I’ve been in the industry for over 20 years, but I love looking at the topic from a fresh perspective,… And Jessica allows the reader to do just that. This book will be a great gift for anyone thinking about moving into Cybersecurity.

I think is a very informative well-laid-out and fun to read guide with plenty of case studies and references to their news articles. A very good place to start.I gained a new point of view on why social engineering works, physical security, the culture and role of cyber security.

Aaron Birnbaum

Dr. Jessica Barker’s book is extremely thorough and comprehensive-and for a a change actually readable without falling asleep. It seems to cover nearly every topic relevant to cybersecurity, but really emphasizes the base knowledge and skills for starting and continuing a cybersecurity career.I especially appreciated the sections on soft skills, the fact that a degree isn’t necessary, and misinformation and disinformation are covered.I highly recommend picking this book up!#cybersecurity #career
