Looking Like I’m In When I’m Not Just Got Easier
I’ve been using smart timers for quite some time to maintain lights around the house whilst away. What I had used were from Orvibo using the HomeMate app to switch them on an off and to configure timers. However, to achieve voice commands, there was the added faff of installing the Orivbo ‘skill’ to your Alexa set up so you could start saying things like ‘Alexa turn off lounge’ etc. Then one by one, after probably 8 years use, these switches started to fail. An alternative was needed.Firstly, let me shout it from the roof-tops – Smart switches can ONLY turn things on and off if they have a physical on/off switch themselves, table lamps being a good example. Turning on the mains to a modern TV will only restore it to stand-by and therefore not be any use having it remotely switched on.The attraction of buying the actual Amazon Basics Smart Plugs was that they were designed for, and dedicated to Alexa. No adding ‘skills’ required.INSTALLATIONI bought 4 in a single box. If I have one criticism of this, it’s that the 4 separate QR codes for each one’s quick install are printed so close together on one piece of paper that I constantly got error messages. To a certain extent this doesn’t matter as you can go down the ‘I Haven’t got a code’ route which seems to work just fine and probably takes about a minute longer.Once you’ve named your plug (make sure they’re all different names and don’t include the same start word – it doesn’t like “Lounge – Desklamp” and “Lounge-Tablelamp” for example.) Anyway, since you can group these into a cluster called “Lounge”, Desklamp and Tablelamp will do just fine. Then you’re ready to roll. Using either buttons in the Alexa app or voice commands you can now turn things on and off at will. It really is that simple.SETTING TIMERSYou’ll probably end up with two timers per switch, one for ‘On’ and the other for ‘Off’. That way you can set individual lights to come on and off at slightly differing intervals, giving a more realistic appearance of being in when you’re not.One super feature not encountered on the Orvibo switches was the ability to set a start timer at ‘Sunset’ which absolves me of the tedious task of changing start times as the seasons change. Bed-time is bed-time so changing the ‘offs’ wasn’t an issue. To maintain the illusion created by random starts, you have a one-hour leeway of whenever sunset is, so you can set your lights to random amounts of minutes either side of the official sunset for your area.I’ve now got eight of these things and they’re all behaving themselves.Good VFM in my view.

Very convenient and easy to use
I bought this to use with an extension lead in a socket that was hard to reach. I set it up to work with my Echo using the Alexa app, and it only took a couple of minutes. I have a double plug socket with individual switches and it fit perfectly.I can now control the entire extension lead from my phone’s Alexa app which gives me a lot of control if I need to turn off the power socket for any reason. It’s easy to set up using the QR code on the plug, but they give you the code on a piece of paper too, so you don’t need to access the plug if you ever need to set it up again

Functional
Works pretty much as claimed, however, while they connect to your network OK, with the latest version of the Alexa app, I am unable to chose which of the two networks I run at home to connect to, as it always defaults to the one I don’t want and none of the online instructions on how to do it are up to date.

Brilliant! Great for smart lamps!
I love this! I’ve got all my stand lights and lamps plugged in! “Alexa, switch on the living room lamp!” Brilliant! There’s a button on top of the plug to press to manually switch the plug on and off too, or on the app! (See photo of app page).Hmm. I should stand outside my house and test switching the lights on with my app…That worked well!I like it so much I bought a second box and told my friends about it.It was so easy and fast to set up using the Alexa app. There’s a sheet with the QR codes to scan from the app. Plug the plug in, open the app, search then scan the code – just point generally at the 4 codes on the set up slip. It automatically detects the right code.

Simple setup
Ridiculously easy to setup via the Alexa app. Really impressed. These are by far the simplest to setup and seem very stable. Using 3rd party products I found them to lose connection but these are super stable. They are also a lot smaller than a lot of other products so they fit better into tight spaces.

Good quality, work well
Works as expected, connected well to Alexa and Wi-Fi. Well designed and much smaller when using with extensions.

Unbelievably easy to set up!
This budget-friendly smart plug is a dream to set up and use, and can be controlled via Alexa.

QR code faulty but device OK
The QR code on the box doesn’t work. The one printed on the instructions doesn’t work, the one on the plug doesn’t work. Tried with two phones. Tried the manual connection and found there’s a different procedure / lights for Amazon as opposed to Amazon Basics. Once set up it works well so far.
