I got this as I am a sucker for SNK games. I figured having a portable with just SNK games on it would be a nice change of pace from carrying around an emulation handheld with thousands of games on it (choice paralysis is a thing). The device itself is just “OK”. It isn’t the worst handheld but any decent $75 or so emulation device with feel a lot better. However, it can game. Obviously, being SNK that means a lot of fighting games on it. But they do give you a few Metal Slug games, Top Player Golf and a few other games as a change up. Sadly, Pulstar and Viewpoint weren’t among them.For short gaming sessions or as a gift to a gamer in your life, this would be a nice gift. But for long sessions or if you need more variety, look toward some of the sub $100 emulation gaming handhelds.
I was waiting for the HyperMegaTech Neo Geo Super Pocket, but the price jumped from $60 and after delays, it was still unavailable on Amazon. I got this Unico Pocket for $60 instead. This has more Metal Slug games and looks more comfortable for your thumbs and hands.Pros: Clicky buttons. Comfortable to hold. Button mapping. 10 save slots. Both MVS arcade (endless coins) and AES home console versions of same game (not sure if the case for all games). 5 Metal Slug games. Sports games. Beat ‘em ups. One-on-one fighting games.Cons: The control pad isn’t as smooth at changing direction left to right as the left joystick. While playing Metal Slug 3’s underwater section, I couldn’t smoothly swim around and would not be able to move until lifting off and back on a direction. This isn’t a problem with the left joystick, which is preferable. Too many one-on-one fighting games.
The son really like receiving this for his birthday gift. It a decent alternative to a switch if you are holding off on getting one for your younger kiddos as we are. The graphics quality is what you might expect from retro gaming systems, and the battery life seems to be pretty descent. It does offer quite a few games but the majority of the games are very similar/identical ie. Fighting Game A, Fighting Game A 2, Fighting Game A 3, etc. Different Combat Game B, 2,3,4, etc. But again the kiddo doesn’t seem to mind and really enjoys it. End of the day it is a good value if you don’t want your kid getting pulled into games that are pay to play and want to keep them off of the internet.
Good product to play with while taking a long flight or trip. If you’re a nostalgic person this is the handheld for you.
