Great way to play PC Engine games
I was initially disheartened when the reviews came out earlier this year (2025), but then Retron made improvements prior to it’s release. I have a selection of PC Engine HuCards, I did seem to have some read problems when I first tried them but subsequently they’ve all worked perfectly. I never had an original PC Engine, they were not very common in the UK as I recall, but they were known and I always wanted one. Now I finally have my own machine with all the modern features like USB-C power and HDMI output. It is probably a little larger than an original PC Engine I believe, but has great styling and comes with a very nice wired controller that feels good to use, even has those auto-fire switches. I’m led to believe that the two controller sockets are TG-16 ones and there are also 2 USB ports under those. During game play you can bring up a menu system and load and save your game progress. You can also rewind about 12 seconds if needed. I have a small collection of games but I’d like to get more, most are compatible (always check), but many are quite expensive so I’m hoping for firmware updates or custom firmwares to make use of that MicroSD slot or allow multicarts to be used. To anyone wanting to enjoy some PC Engine games without wanting to buy into old hardware and the nightmare of cables and converters to get a half-decent video output, I’d recommend this, it’s perfect for my needs.
Better than you’d think!
Works well, better than I expected. All my carts work so so far. Success is better when card is pulled out about 2mm. But this is often true of the original consoles in the 80s!Why buy one? Two reasons in my case. Saving games mid way through a level is traditional a pain (not so here). Also no separate hdmi upscaler is required (that are often times hit and miss) in order to get a sharp picture on a modern TV :))Caution: I found a Bluetooth joypad can work for gaming, but in my case it would not control the inbuilt OS which effectively knocks the best new features on the head 🙁

I have a few real pc engines and a turbografx16 and I still loves this thing. Plays my games great in HD , with rewind and save states, the unit looks good and is relatively inexpensive. I don’t know what else people want or why read so much hate for hyperkin. I have many hyperkin consoles and none have failed. The controller is not my favorite, its chunky bulky and the d pad is sketch. I use oldskool and original oem with this. My only complaint is doesn’t support flashcards. I almost didn’t buy because of that. I liked it so much i ordered a second. Don’t recommend buying this from Amazon. They shipped mine in a plastic bag so the packaging is all dinged up when you get it. How many times was it dropped i wonder. I ordered from VGP and no issues. They don’t ship in a plastic bag lol
PCエンジンミニに収録されてないHuカードのゲームをプレイするために購入。最初は一部のHuカードが認識しないことがありましたが、ダイソーで売ってるアルカリ電解水をクリーンペーパーにつけてキレイにすれば私の手持ちのほとんどのソフトが動きました。欲を言えば、ストⅡダッシュをプレイするにあのゲームパッドでは厳しいので最初から6ボタンのパッドにしてほしかった。もし、このメーカーがアーケードカードを含むPCエンジンのCDロムの互換機を出してくれれば間違いなく買うと思う。
正規品のPCエンジンに比べてゲーム起動が遅いです。HDMI端子で綺麗な映像。でもPCエンジンにHDMI出力アダプターを使うと同じ。
This does exactly as it’s advertised.A new RetroN from Hyperkin designed to play TurboGrafx 16 and PC Engine games.It does all this perfectly with the small collection of games I have.The *only* draw back is the rewind and save states don’t work fully well on some titles and the d-pad is a little bit spongy.Other than that this is the Optimal way to enjoy some retro games output to a modern TV.I’ll update this review if the next few games I guy have issues with the Hyperkin.Game on!
