Really good – but failed within a year
Updated Feb ‘21. After just under 1year of weekday use the screen failed and I couldn’t turn it on. Worked fine on a Friday, dead on Monday. Amazon customer services were absolutely superb and arranged a replacement without hesitation. It is however a superb concept and the screen is great while it’s working and works well taking power and data via USB-C.I’ve been using my screen for a few months now.I’ve bought the model of screen that comes with USB-C and Micro-HDMI and it’s been working really well with both a HP Windows Laptop and a MacBook Pro 2018 (both using USB-C). I’ve also had it working with an old MS SurfacePro 3 via an adapter cable to send the signal into the micro-HDMI input, and that worked well too.The case that comes with the screen is fine – it’s portable and functional but you can’t adjust the tilt angle and of course there is no height adjustment. It’s fine as supplied to sit next to a laptop on a desk and that’s obviously it’s intended purpose. I’ve been using mine for a couple of months now and with my laptop now on a laptop riser I’ve had to put my ZenScreen setup on top of an Amazon box to give it some height. It would be really great if Asus could offer some kind of holder to allow the screen to be raised and tilted but no criticism of Asus because this is intended to be a portable screen and for that purpose it excels.I’ve had absolutely no problems with the brightness of the screen which is consistent with my laptop setting. I’ve also had no problems charging the screen via the USB-C connection – the HP laptop does sometimes display a warning that it may not have enough power to charge the screen but I’ve always ignored that and the screen has remained fully charged at 100% – and I’ve been using it all day, every day, for a couple of months now.Other than my observation that this could benefit from some kind of desktop holder, this has been a really good screen with no problems at all.
Clean and Bright. Great bit of kit.
This is a bloody good bit of kit. I had one of these before, one of the £80 Chinese ones from a brand that I’ve never heard of. This one leaves them standing. It was well packaged, super nice design, slim, easy to operate and as bright and clear as my laptop. Plug and play and I’m up and running. No regrets here.
Convenient, but not the crispest display. Battery is good but adds complications
I do like this extension monitors – they make multi-monitor set up for laptops so easy to do and easily go into a rucksack with the laptop. This one has the internal battery which makes use with a laptop on battery more power efficient – but it also adds some niggles. You have to tell it each time to NOT draw power from the laptop – and if you don’t, on my laptop I get warnings as the Surface I have isn’t capable of running AND charging the battery. I have another one of these without the battery and it’s easier to use from that respect. With the battery it wins if you’re travelling though – much longer life, with the inbuilt battery lasting around 3 hours without too many issues – but you aren’t going to get more than that with any sort of decent brightness.Needs the software installed to work fully and then you get more options as well, which are much easier to set than using the rocker and push switch on the unit itself.USB C but comes with adapters for USB A if needed, though I’d recommend purchasing a separate USB A – C cable if needed to get the length right for your usage.Picture quality is a bit of a weak area with text looking a little rough and not the same as a full IPS set up – but usable, readable and so convenient.overall, a fantastic portable screen to add more capability to a laptop – its not the same as a full monitor, but you can stick it in a bag and use it with ease – and the ASUS ones are the best I’ve used for a performance/price point.
Laptop overheated with this plugged in.
This is a nice lightweight compact monitor. Easily fits in most laptop rucksacks with your laptop etc. so great form factor.I was looking forward to using it. It plugged in and worked straight away no problems with my Surface Pro Laptop. However in less than 2 hours my laptop crashed for the first time ever. It had massively overheated. As the monitor has no option for a separate power input it is going back. The monitor just has the single USB C so has to draw power and signal from that. Searching online others have also had the overheating issue. Note I was just doing emails nothing taxing.
Portable excellent quality monitors powered via USB-C (~8W/monitor) that work on a 20W USB HUB
Excellent monitors – have been connecting 3 of them to my MacBook Air M1 2020 via mains powered Kensington UH7000C USB 3.0 7-Port Charging Hub (5V 4A = 20W shared across 7 USB-A ports) which somehow manages to power them up even though average 8W per monitor is required (24W total). The setup is very portable and the only improvement that I would make is to add a USB-C hub that can PD power both my host device (MacBook Air) as well as provide 3 x USB ports with a minimum 24W shared power (an additional USB port would be freed up of my MacBook if hub’s PD passthrough could power up my laptop while charging 3 monitors). However, I could not find such a USB hub yet and have to live with the current set up that still works but requires two power outlets for two chargers. I have had Levono micro USB powered monitors before but the quality and resolution of these ones is heaven and would not look back. I also got a central portable stand for to locate one of the monitors right above my laptop’s screen 🙂
Game changer for working on the train
This screen has been awesome for working on the go.Whether I am on the train or in a hotel room having a second screen that is light and easy to set up is a game changer for productivity.Plugs into my MacBook air via usb c.The case converts onto a stand for the screen which is really useful.Looking around at the other options I feel this is a no brainer, especially for the price. Its powered through your laptop power via the usbc cable so no extra cables.I was curious if it would work as an external screen for the Switch. But it doesn’t work. If that is something you are looking for this is not it.
Defeito.
Crap to be honest.Needs to be permanently connected to a power source and has no speakers so it is actually pretty useless as a “portable” monitor.
This monitor is great value. It fits well in the laptop bag, easy to use and reliable. The only downside is that the screen isn’t too bright, so it’s a little hard to see under bright lights, but if you don’t have lights directly overhead it’s totally fine. It’s still visible under direct lights, just not fantastic. I still recommend it.
