It’s brilliant! Rural folk – buy this!
This is a review for the ZTE 5G CPE MC888.I live in the country and we have terrible wired internet, and no fibre broadband available here. 4G coverage is excellent, so we’ve been using ‘4G broadband’ for a few years now, via a Huawei mifi device and a SMARTY card. We ended up needing two cards/devices as our walls are thick and the signal wasn’t getting through. Wanted to get rid of having two devices, and use a better router with a mesh system……I did LOADS of research before getting this!! I’d tried a cheaper Archer MR 600 CAT6 4G device first, which just got very hot, kept dropping out and was disappointing! Sent it back, did more research and came up with this.I’m using a SMARTY card in it, and I’m on the edge of a 5G network, so thought I’d get the 5G capability, even if we can’t get 5G just yet. As I thought, I’m only getting 4G, BUT the speeds I’m getting are still amazing compared to the old wired BT internet, and to the SMARTY card used in the mifi device. Setting up the device was easy. It works best in a very specific spot on a window sill in the living room. I moved it all over the house to see if anywhere else was better: upstairs was worse strangely.Bought a set of three Deco mesh hubs (TP-link Deco X10 AX1500, £144.99 on Amazon), as on its own the ZTE couldn’t get through our very thick walls. The set up works perfectly. The first Deco hub connects to the ZTE router directly, and becomes Hub number 1 (hidden under an old 50’s radio’s shell in the photo!) which then sends the signal to the other Deco hubs. I now have a brilliant signal all over the house, with two Decos, and one extra one which we only use when people stay in the Granny annex.We’ve had this set up for a couple of months now, and we only lost signal once, when it was chucking it down with rain/stormy. We’ve had bad weather since then, and all has been well. Copes with three devices at once streaming films with no problem. No problems with Teams meetings for work, with lots of people on the meeting, and sharing presentations etc.It’s fairly pricey (£212.49 when I bought it), but so far this has been money well spent.
Excellent 5G mobile WiFi hotspot.
I’ve been looking to upgrade our motorhome Wi-Fi for a while. I’ve previously used both Huawei and LTE 4G Mobile Hotspots but with 5G now rolling out more widely I wanted to take advantage of the higher data transmission speeds especially for streaming video. This unit is the first one I’ve found that is reasonably affordable. It’s much bigger (and heavier) than my old Huawei 5577 4G hotspot but this is a good thing as it provides space for a much larger internal antenna and a larger battery. Reception and signal strength seem much improved over the older 4G units. So far, I’ve had no problems getting a good signal in our motorhome using one of two positions in the van; either by the habitation door or on the dashboard. The ZTE U50 supports external antennas so I might get one to use in poorer signal areas. I’m using an existing EE data SIM but my unit was delivered with a Smarty Data SIM so you have everything you need to get up and running with mobile data. It recognised the EE SIM and auto-configured so I was up and running in under a minute. It charges via USB-C and battery life is excellent; around 10 hours. One thing to note – it goes in to sleep mode if nothing is connected to it and you have to wake it up (with a short press of the power button) in order to re-connect. It doesn’t seem to get too warm in use either. Highly recommended.
Bought for caravan wifi. Works while charging and with EE phone sim
Straight out the box put my personal EE phone sim in it. Plugged it in Switched on and perfect 5G within seconds. A little point to note the password is where it says pass key on the sticker under the battery cover. connected tablet and phone played 2 films at the same time and no wheel of death. You can plug an external antenna into it if you wish to buy one. But it works bang on at the site we are at in cornwall so no need at the moment. It will come in dead handy for car journeys as well as it charges from a standard use C charger. And my personal phone is on a sim only contract and unlimited data but at 100mps max speed but on 5G it is spot and plenty for a couple of tablets playing films or 4 phones Web browsing. And as its 5g and wifi6 it will be good for a few years without it being totally out dated. Obviously all this is dependent on the signal you have in your area. But my phone had reasonable 4G in the same spot and this is getting 5G full strength so it’s a definite improvement. All in all I would recommend and if it’s not working in your area due to signal strength you can try an external antenna a change of service provider and if all that fails just send it back free return. Worth noting it came with a free smarty data only sim which you can just activate if you wish and add credit as you go as there is no contract. I think they use the 3 network so good for cornwall. I will update if I have any issues but at the moment so far so good.
In eerste instantie was ik een beetje sceptisch omdat de verpakking en ook de gebruiksaanwijzing in het Pools waren. Na het insteken van de nano-simkaart en het opstarten van de router kon ik echter bij de eerste ingebruikname de Engelse taal kiezen, wat voor mij geen probleem is. Het opstarten duurt steeds eventjes, maar dat is relatief. Ik denk een seconde of 20. Verder vond de router direct mijn aanbieder en liet zien dat ik 5G had. Ook het aanmelden van in mijn geval telefoons gaat gemakkelijk; QR code scannen en klaar. Iedereen had een goede ontvangst. Hierbij lag de router afgedekt in de middenconsole van de auto. De accuduur is ook zeer goed vind ik. Van vol naar ergens in de 70% bij een rit van meer dan 4 uur. Het enige waar ik nog niet helemaal uit ben is of je het apparaat kan laden tijdens gebruik. Het lijkt er in ieder geval op dat je de router niet kunt starten als deze aan de laadkabel hangt. Haal je de kabel eruit, dan wel en dan kun je de kabel er ook weer insteken. Maar of er dan wordt bijgeladen? Overall ben ik zeer tevreden.
Simkarte wüsste ich nicht sicher wie rum sie rein gesteckt wird. Aber hab es nach dem 2 Versuch geschafft. Ansonsten alles besten funktioniert einwandfrei. Und sieht gut aus.
A mio parere è un ottimo dispositivo, Potrebbe anche meritare la 5.a stella che sarebbe sicuramente guadagnata se si considera il costo medio di 185,00 euro.Io l’ho potuto prendere in un momento particolare di offerta a soli 175,00 euro.Arrivo da un percorso di circa 2 anni su device per connessioni LTE; sono andato sempre migliorando come prestazioni.Dalla prima “saponetta” TP-Link M7200. Ho provato un device fisso MR6400 ma andava come la “saponetta”.Un primo salto apprezzabile su TP-Link M7350; ma ancora meglio quando finalmente sono arrivato al CAT 6 MR600 un 4G+.Sono rimasto su questo ultimo device per circa 4/6 mesi convincendomi del salto definitivo sul 5G che intanto avevo cominciato a sperimentare con l’HotSpot dello smartphone.Dopo avere letto prove e recensioni ho preso il “blasonato” ZTE Mu5120: una delusione 🤦♂️Costosissimo: mediamente 280,00 euro. nella stessa posizione dello MR600, pur se prendeva il 5G raramente raggiungeva e teneva nella giornata i 40Mbps/10Mbps.All’aperto o comunque favore di antenna si era eccellente; ma in casa nelle stesse identiche posizione dello MR600 ( avevo un V3 ), non si meritava i galloni del suo costo.Inoltre avevo avuto problemi di riconoscimento della SIM ( ILIAD ma anche con VERY MOBILE e NOITEL); per poter stabilire la connessione ho dovuto forzare la connessione 3G; quindi stabilita la connessione ha eseguito un aggiornamento software dopo il quale ha riconosciuto tutte le SIM e stabilito le connessioni sia 4G+ che 5G.Deluso ho restituito il Mu5120 ed preso questo U50: una favola!.Subito efficiente. Nella stessa posizione dello MR600 stabilisce la connessione 5G e non vedo mai meno di 80/100 Mbps in download nella giornata.Il software da anche informazione della BTS che aggancia e se lo si mette sotto test si possono vedere anche la aggregazioni di banda che fa sul fronte 4G+.L’upload non è mai meno di 30/40. E sto parlando di casa con muri spessi; al 10 piano di condominio di 14 ma circondato da condomini parimenti alti … insomma le diverse BTS sono sempre in parte un po’ “oscurate”.All’aperto, a favore di BTS “pompa” che è una potenza 150/40 con SIM ILIAD. Sono consapevole che il 5G potrebbe dare molto di più ma nel piccolo della mia competenza ritengo che il valore costo/prestazioni sia altamente conveniente.Piccola nota negativa.Se impostata massima potenza della trasmissione WiFi la batteria fatica ad arrivare alle 8 ore di durata con un solo computer collegato.Ma è una prova estrema fatta nell’arco delle 9/10 ore di lavoro tipiche di una giornata smart dalle 8.30 alle 18.30.Ma anche in questa evenienza basta attaccarlo ad una porta usb del computer e mantiene la connessione nel mentre che si caricaQuindi mediamente 4 stelle ma pienamente meritate. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ in relazione al costo.ATTENZIONE!! 7 Agosto 2025 – scrivo questa “appendice” per un problema software.MANCA LA SEZIONE GESTIONE VPNPrima di comprare il dispositivo me ne ero cercato con attenzione le specifiche.Tra tutte le caratteristiche che mi interessavano avevo controllato che ci fosse la sezione dedicata alle impostazioni della VPN.Allego un screenshoot che documenta quanto riporta il datasheet; poi ripetuto anche in altri manuali.Rimane da me confermata la soddisfazione che ho espresso come prestazioni … immutate anche dopo altri 2 mesi di utilizzo n giro per l’Italia.Ma per il livello di costo ed obbiettivi che si pone il prodotto, è una mancanza grave a mio parere.Sicuramente è anche colpa mia non avere verificato tutte le sezione della interfaccia; le avevo fatto uno scorrimento veloce, inclusa la sezione per “sviluppatori”.Sono stato poco attento; credevo di aver intravisto quelle sezioni ma mi sono sbagliato.👉Evidenzio👈 che ho contattato sia il venditore qui su Amazon, che ZTE su riferimenti datimi dal venditore.Ho trovato disponibilità a prendere in carico la segnalazione.ZTE mi ha già risposto appunto dandomi riscontro che hanno passato la segnalazione al Team dedicato.Avrò cura di dare aggiornamento.AGGIORNAMENTO al 3 SETTEMBRE 2025Purtroppo ho dovuto fare il RESO con l’aiuto di AMAZON perché altrimenti lo sarebbe stato solo entro i 14 giorni.Bisogna quindi fare ATTENZIONE al dispositivo che si acquista chiedendo prima al venditore se è un prodotto “brandizzato” o con software originale ZTE.Spesso si limitano a dire che il dispositivo è “SBLOCATO UTILIZZABILE CON TUTTE LE SIM” ma questo non vuol dire, come è capitato a me, che ildispositivo non sia proveniente da un Lotto destinato ad un operatore del settore ( carrier ) nel mio caso era deducibile che era prodotto della gamma TIM.Una nota positiva di questa esperienza però ci è stata. Ho potuto fare un altro acquisto, quindi consapevole, per soli 10 euro in più ossia 185 €uro, da un venditore che mi ha risposto a domanda che il dispositivo da loro venduto è originale ZTE. Ora che scrivo sto proprio lavorando connesso col nuovo dispositivo.Il contesto è anche documentabile dalla home page del router che tipicamente ha il mood di ZTE; e quindi ritrovo la sezione dedicata al settaggio della VPN.A livello di dispositivo posso quindi rinnovare e ribadire la prima recensione positiva a 4 stelle.Non lo abbasso a 3 stelle perché la gestione VPN esiste; necessita però essere un minimo consapevoli e competenti in fase di acquisto.
