Works but documentation poor
There’s one gotcha with this product – it needs its own power supply. At first sight it looks like a simple adapter so it’s easy not to put the right number of cables in and then nothing works. When it’s powered up there’s a red internal LED that shines through the casing so you know that at least you’ve got that right. :-)I used this for connecting an old IDE hard drive to a modern SATA board. I simply plugged the side of the connector with lots of holes into the end of the hard drive with lots of pins. Then I plugged one end of the modern SATA cable into a spare slot in the motherboard and the other end into the equivalent slot in the converter.The next gotcha was that for some reason I assumed that with a cable going into the converter the hard drive would somehow magically pick up its own power supply from the fresh air. Wrong. I forgot to connect a power cable to the hard drive too.Fortunately there’s a cable included. One end with four holes (or pins, can’t remember which) went into a spare cable connection from the motherboard and the other end divided into two different types of cable – one of these went into the converter to power the converter and one went into the hard drive to power the hard drive.So that was simple. I changed the jumper setting on the hard drive to ‘Cable select’ (search for your hard drive make and model + jumper settings + image) and everything worked (you can search for ‘Cable Select’ too but it’s not very enlightening unless you’re an electrician).The included instructions are bare bone (and don’t include the referenced image of DIP switch settings as others have pointed out though in my case I didn’t need them). With hindsight I can see they’re all there but they’re semi-geeky so I hope my version helps. 🙂
Simple to install
Having rebuilt my PC, it wasn’t until I came to connect the hard drives that I made the realisation that I’d forgotten to check my hard drive and optical drive were compatible with SATA connectors. Fortunately, I discovered these adapters which are stupidly simple to use.They are two-way so can handle SATA to IDE or IDE to SATA convertion and also as I’ve stated, HDD or optical drives. The connections are clearly marked so it is nigh on impossible to wire these up incorrectly (handy if like me, you’re knowledge of such things is limited). What you should note is that they require a SATA power connector in addition to the SATA data cable. There is a single SATA cable supplied in the box. The connected device will also require it’s own power supply.The converter will protrude almost 6cm from the rear of your connected device so you should consider this and ensure you have enough room within your PC case.Overall, this is an excellent converter, easy to use and I should also add that StarTech has excellent on-line customer support via a chat facility. You can’t go wrong with this one.
Very very slowwwww….
Had hoped for better. Intended purpose was to connect old IDE/PATA drives to SATA controllers so as to avoid using old controller cards. Connection of the adapter was easy and it worked straightaway. However, on the old controller cards, these disks manage about 50MB/s read and 45MB/s write for large sustained writes (too big to cache). On the Bi-Directional SATA IDE Adapter Converter, write speeds were less than a tenth of that at 2-4MB/s. Tried on 3 different disks; setting disks as cable select or master made no difference. Position of switches on the adapter (which are inadequately described on the instruction sheet) made no difference. Not fit for purpose as these disks are used for backup of system images (30-60GB). Might just about be adequate for low workloads with small (cacheable) files if desperate.
Great piece of kit for older pata dvd drives
Allowed me to use my older pata dvd rewriter dvr109 on windows 11 pc saving it from landfill – great product and easy to fit and get working. Set everything to master and it’s really just plugnplay

I’m using this device to connect an old Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 IDE hard drive into my SATA-only computer.At first, my computer’s BIOS wouldn’t recognise the IDE hard drive at all. The sheet of instructions is very basic and contains no troubleshooting advice. I read other reviews on Amazon looking for ideas, and saw several people mention changing the jumpers on the IDE drive.As with other reviewers, I found that only Cable Select mode worked – the drive was not detected by the BIOS in either Master nor Slave modes. An added bit of difficulty was that I had to Google how to set the drive’s jumpers correctly because the diagram on the hard drive itself was incomprehensible!Now, I get solid red and green LEDs on this adapter, which I assume means it’s operating correctly. Previously, I was only getting a solid red LED.Both my BIOS and Windows 8 correctly detect the Maxtor IDE drive and I’m able to retrieve the data that I needed and copy it to another drive.NOTE: My motherboard’s SATA controller operates in AHCI mode (setting in the BIOS). This works fine with this adapter and there was no need to change the BIOS setting to work in IDE mode.
This is for the bi directional Sata <> IDE adapter. I only tested this by connecting IDE drives to my Sata only motherboard.It does what it’s supposed to. 1/4 IDE drives were working and in excellent condition, the others were showing signs of head failure (clicking, freezing) which is probably due to the age of the drives and not the fault of this adapter.The way the adapter attaches to the drives is very tight and because of how far back it extends from the drive, it is very easy to snap off the ide connector on the drive if you’re not extremely careful. You will have to attach the other cables beforehand to avoid stressing the hdd ide connector.Nearly everything you could possibly need is provided. A single Molex+ , Molex- and FDD power connector cable takes input molex from your power supply, the other molex connector goes into the drive and the FDD connector powers the Startech adapter itself. A sata cable (provided) then connects the adapter to the motherboard. If you don’t have spare molex psu cables like i did, you will need a sata to molex adapter.The device itself has an led that sometimes lights up orange and other times red. It would have been nice if the manual indicated what these leds indicate especially with my faulty drives.

Seems well made, but for some reason the sata connector is a female instead of a male. I will need to find a male to female cable before I can see if the product even works.
Si possono caricare contemporaneamente 3 dispositivi, è compatto, piacevole da vedere e semplice da usare grazie all’interruttore e ai led di servizio, rosso in carica e verde a carica ultimata. La confezione include 6 tip (basi), in pratica sono 6 carica batterie offerti ad un prezzo invitante. Grazie ai piedini di gomma è stabile sulla scrivania anche se, a mio avviso, un po’ troppo leggero.Mai più grovigli di cavi…
Bought an replacement multi core computer for a much slower 2 core computer. Couldn’t justify the expenseof the msata SSD, when I had a 2 1/2 inch SSD in the much older computer with the OS already installed.Just plug this little adapter in the msata socket on the mother board. Secure it with the provided screws and plug your external SSD drive cable in. Windows, of course, detected the change but accepted the new hardware with no hassle.
