UPDATE: This text is now available as an ebook here: https://tinyurl.com/searchpatternebook
Search Pattern is a collection of step-by-step guides to more than a hundred of the most common types of studies in radiology. Blind spots reported in the literature as well as practical wisdom from experts is synthesized into highly structured processes that can guide the development of better practice. Much of the contained insight has never been organized in one place before. Search Pattern covers almost every type of study that a radiologist will encounter in training or practice. This text is written with the assumption that the reader has familiarity with basic radiologic terminology, anatomy, and physics. In the interest of brevity, almost all information outside of the organized approaches is omitted. The reader is encouraged to look up terms, images, and background information from supplementary resources. Formalized teaching of search patterns is a missing part of the educational literature in our field. Hopefully this book helps fill that void. It is one that I would have benefited from greatly when I was a resident. – Long Tu, YDR Class of 2020

Very useful book
I’m not one to usually leave a review, however I feel obligated here as the reviews were stellar. This book can be summed up with the following “look at everything, and don’t forget to look again at everything”. It’s basically a copy and paste of the same thing over and over, which basically tells you to look at everything. Duh! I didn’t think I had to look at the heart on a chest CT! There is literally nothing helpful that one might expect, such as pearls and pitfalls and actual pathology. The author is lucky he wrote this in 2020, because today’s AI does better.
This is a great resource to have, especially residents beginning their radiology careers or about to take call (R1s and R2s). One of the difficulties when first starting out is what to actually look for on all the different scans that you’ll see. This book nicely organizes studies both by organ system and modality so the type of study you need a search pattern for is easy to locate in the book. Each search pattern/description is very thorough.I think it’s also helpful more experienced radiologists as well to have on hand as a quick reference for certain types of studies you may not be used to reading/out of your specialty. It’s an incredible value for only $20 as most other textbooks cost hundreds of dollars, so this is definitely worth it. Highly recommended!!
When I was training as a radiology resident/fellow, multiple times I thought to myself “Where do I even begin to look?” Even once I had a search pattern and made the finding, a case would come along that I would miss and then have to add on to the search pattern again. This book gives the reader a nice place to start. I was also getting tired of reviewing my search pattern with every trainee rotating through neuroradiology, so hopefully this will allow us time to focus on more interesting aspects of radiology. Take the good, leave the not-so-good, and know that if you see a lot of cases and diligently study that you’ll be a good radiologist.
Great book, it covers such a fundamental aspect of radiology I really can’t believe this hadn’t existed before. It’s easy to read (bullet points) and broken down nicely into relevant sections. I’d definitely recommend this for every radiology resident and/or anyone who needs to a quick refresher on certain topics. The insanely low price of this book is a true testament to the authors desire for universal access to quality radiology educational resources.
