Having bought inexpensive fan-fold and roll-based 4″x6″ thermal printers, I was deeply curious about what additional value you might get with a $255 (!) HP Shipping Label Printer. Thermal printers are all about simplicity and reliability, and so how does that translate with the HP?The first thing I noticed about the HP was the weight. It’s not exactly heavy, but it’s about twice the weight of my other 4″x6″ printers. At least some of that weight difference is in the motor and transmission assembly for the paper handling. Interestingly, the paper path is completely straight, and the paper handling takes either roll-based or fan-fold labels. The paper path makes for easy loading, and decreases the chances or peeled labels and misfeeds to almost zero. A beefier motor theoretically will last longer. The thermal print mechanism appears to be the same as the ones used by everyone else. Print quality is a little above average, for a thermal mechanism, without significant shimmer or vertical swim. The performance is impressive considering the feed rate, and matrix barcodes were readable – even when scaled down to small sizes.As far as value goes, it’s hard to say how this item should rate. If you need continuous, bulletproof operation, and can’t have an employee trying to troubleshoot a label printer, the HP AMZHPKE14X6K1 is a good buy. However, if you’re not generating many labels and care more about cost, this is probably not the unit for you. Conditionally Recommended
So this is definitely a good label printer. It’s very easy to set up and easy to use. It never needs in court toner and it reliably prints labels very quickly. It’s an HP so you would expect it to be a decent printer and it is.My only real thought or issue is that this thing is twice as expensive as other comparable printers. And I’m not sure what you’re getting for the money other than the HP name. It is also a little bigger and bulkier than many other 4 x 6 label printers. Sure I’d let you keep a roll internally. As some of the smaller ones use the accordion labels and they just entering through the back. It’s solid and heavy I’ll give it that.There is no doubt that this is a good printer I’m just not sure it’s worth paying the extra hundred dollars for. It’s the only reason I’m giving him four stars instead of five.
I’ve been a HP user for decades.For the last two years, I’ve been using this generic label printer for about two years now. It was only $120 and has printed 100s and 100s of labels.For this HPPros=includes some labels (about $20 worth)=by HP, who knows printing=more compatible, my old one requires you to put it in a specific USB and if you change USBS, the whole thing stops working unless you rerun some non-official sketchy vendor program=This company will be around longer than the slew of ones sold online. You’ll likely get better support.=Better drivers and OS support.=You’d hope it’s more durable. Seems to be.Cons=way bulkier than my previous one. My old one is tiny, about 1 and 1/2 wallets and fits easily behind my monitor. This one is way bigger and heavier.=about double in price
