An accessible synthesis of ethical issues raised by artificial intelligence that moves beyond hype and nightmare scenarios to address concrete questions. Artificial intelligence powers Google’s search engine, enables Facebook to target advertising, and allows Alexa and Siri to do their jobs. AI is also behind self-driving cars, predictive policing, and autonomous weapons that can kill without human intervention. These and other AI applications raise complex ethical issues that are the subject of ongoing debate. This volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series offers an accessible synthesis of these issues. Written by a philosopher of technology, AI Ethics goes beyond the usual hype and nightmare scenarios to address concrete questions. Mark Coeckelbergh describes influential AI narratives, ranging from Frankenstein’s monster to transhumanism and the technological singularity. He surveys relevant philosophical discussions: questions about the fundamental differences between humans and machines and debates over the moral status of AI. He explains the technology of AI, describing different approaches and focusing on machine learning and data science. He offers an overview of important ethical issues, including privacy concerns, responsibility and the delegation of decision making, transparency, and bias as it arises at all stages of data science processes. He also considers the future of work in an AI economy. Finally, he analyzes a range of policy proposals and discusses challenges for policymakers. He argues for ethical practices that embed values in design, translate democratic values into practices and include a vision of the good life and the good society.

Engaging and thought provoking book on the critical subject of AI Ethics
Excellent engaging and thought provoking book. Poses lots of really good questions about what AI can do and will do for individuals, society and the world. Clearly written by a philosopher.I used it alongside learning remotely for the British Computer Societies AI foundation certificate and found it beats a lot of the bland writing from technical people trying to approach the subject.I read it from cover to cover which I don’t often do wtih a non-fiction book

Mostly a good primer on ethics and AI
This is a concise and comprehensive primer on the issues surrounding the disruptive advent of AI technologies in society. It is well-written, engaging and thought-provoking – I often paused to reflect on what I had just read. The only problem I have with the book is the final chapter – it appears to lose the plot somewhat. Other than that, a good read.

Unpacking the Complexity of AI Ethics: A Thought-Provoking Review of ‘AI Ethics
Coeckelbergh provides a comprehensive overview of the key challenges facing AI ethics, including disaster scenarios, bias and discrimination, and the lack of transparency and accountability in AI systems. He also explores the principles and frameworks that have been proposed to address these challenges, including the GDPR and the principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy, justice, and explicability. One of the things that struck me most about this book is the way in which it highlights the importance of prioritizing ethical issues in AI development. Coeckelbergh argues that AI ethics is not just about avoiding harm, but also about promoting positive outcomes and creating a more just and equitable society. This perspective is refreshing and much needed in an industry that is often focused on short-term gains rather than long-term consequences.Overall, I highly recommend “AI Ethics” to anyone who is interested in learning more about the ethical implications of AI. The book is well-written, engaging, and thought-provoking, and it provides a comprehensive overview of the key issues and challenges facing AI ethics.

Good food for thought
A nice quick read on the ethics of ai. It asks a lot of questions, prompting the reader to consider their own opinion. Heading into a module on ai ethics next semester and I feel this was a great way to get an early introduction.

doesn’t get to the point, spends the whole book discussing what the point could be

How to be a Humanist in the age of lesser impact on Organized Religions and More Relevance on Big Data. How to have a better Mind-Body connection and serenity without losing awareness of what the powerful AI could do to our concepts of Ethics.
