Easy Peasy…
Brother DCP-J1200W – if you want a low cost, no fuss, printer for small volume printing its excellent. Delivered next day, unboxed, inserted print cartridges, powered on, pressed the WPS button on a BT router, working in under 30mins: printing from an iMac, Win11, an old iPad, and Samsung phone (no app needed): surprised at how easy the process was. If you get really stuck you can use a USB cable (not supplied) to connect to a Windows PC. It will do double sided, envelopes, etc: it can get fiddly, but to be honest if are doing a lot of these you should be looking at a more expensive printer that caters for that. Its reasonably fast, fairly quite, small footprint, big paper tray, print cartridges easy to install, good quality print: for the cost its Excellent value.

Fab printer!
Bought this to replace an old Epson which was showing its age. Didn’t want to spend a lot as it’s just for occasional printing at home, so settled on this Brother. So far, excellent! Easy to install & to get it connected to home WiFi although, being anti-tech, I did do a lot of swearing completing registration on the app so that I could register for Ecopro. The print quality is very good. Prints very fast too, plus (& this got me really impressed!) is if you print a doc with several pages, it does them in reverse so last prints first & 1st prints last, so you don’t have to re-order them. Love the proper paper tray; a great improvement on the paper feed on the Epson. Time will tell, no doubt, but so far I love it.

Not as good as an Epson
I went for this because it had good writeups. However, it isn’t as good as my old Epson Stylus. It’s a lot of faffing about getting paper in and out or if you want to print an envelope. It was a lot simpler with the Epson. But this is what I’ve got so I’ll live with it. It does print fast and well.

Very quick to print and good quality
I am upgrading from an old Canon pixma printer and have read many good things about the Brother brand. For a home-office setup this is a great little printer. My initial thoughts:1. Speed of printing – this is much quicker than I expected. Not just the physical speed of the printing but the total time taken from pressing print on the computer to the paper coming out is < 3 seconds. I was used to my Canon doing the usual wakeup dance every time but this Brother printer from standby seems to be ready to print almost immediately. Very impressed.2. Quality - this is good for what it is. Don't expect photo printing but that's not what it is advertised for. For documents and general prints this will be all the printer that you need.3. Setup - quite a mixed bag actually. I was hoping setup would be more straight forward than it ended up being. My main issue is that once you download the app, and go to the Wireless printer setup page, you are presented with an automatic setup process. However this printer model appears not to support the automatic recognition and the app isn't particularly user friendly in letting you know that. So what you have to do is wait ~1min for the automatic recognition to fail e.g. ("no printer found") and then wait another ~1m for the overall setup to fail before being presented with the option of doing a Manual setup (where you are asked to input the printer model number).Being the impatient type that I am, I ended up wasting 20mins or so trouble shooting why the automatic device recognition wasn't working. I wish the app would have just let me know that I need to wait / give users the option to just skip to manual registration.

Seems to be what I was looking for
Set-up took a while but there were no problems. Installing the 4 ink cartridges was easy and then I used the installation program downloaded from the Brother website to connect it by wi-fi to my home internet hub and that was trouble-free. All the utilities to print and scan were installed as well. This was a Windows 10 laptop. Having copied the installation files to a USB hard drive I then used it to install on two Windows 11 laptops. I also have a W11 pc in an outbuilding but I haven’t tried linking it to that yet. That connects to the hub via a long patch cable not via wi-fi but as it is on the home network I assume it will be OK but there’s another printer out there so it doesn’t matter. I chose this printer because it fits in the space available and it doesn’t have any touch screens to complicate things for another user who does not like such things. It really seems simple to use, holds a good deal of paper, doesn’t have a duplex (not needed here). I also like the colour (white) – won’t show the dust so much! I particularly wanted a flat bed scanner and that works OK too. I will not be updating the firmware as I might want to use non-OEM cartridges but if the official ones last a long time I may re-order them when needed though they’re quite expensive. You don’t get forced into paying for a regular ink supply.

Don’t Buy
The printer arrived with magenta ink leaked on the product.I successfully downloaded the Brother mobile app and could operate the printer via the app. However, signing up for the Eco-print option was impossible. The process continually stalled halfway through, after having provided my address and bank details.I contacted the Brother support telephone number, and they admitted that a number of customers had had the same issue, but the problem was yet to be resolved. There was also a problem with colour printing; the magenta ink cartridge did not work despite having run through the print head cleaner option numerous times. The black ink cartridge registered as low even though I had used it to print less than 50 times. The ink may have been used up during the endless attempts to clean the printer heads.Customer support was absolutely useless, and I will never buy another Brother printer. All very frustrating and time-wasting.Also, if you’re not on the Eco print option, one ink cartridge costs £48!
