A slowburning, immersive VR masterpiece from the master Hidetaka Miyazaki
A beautiful piece of software with a magical story which takes a dark twist in the last “epochs” of the tale.After leaving the game alone for around a week, and then going back in, I was expecting not to be as drawn into the environment of the ornate old grammar school, and it’s gardens and spaces – but it still retained the “wow” factor for me.VR can be the ultimate immersive experience – and so far I feel it doesn’t seem to wane in the way that standard 3D can over time. It puts you right in the game. I love being able to literally lean over a balcony rail and look down into the elegantly furnished room below, or open an upstairs window and lean into the outside world of the gardens – you can almost feel the breeze. The scene in the old theatre is stunning, the stage backdrop adorned with a whimsical picture straight from a children’s book. The characters, from the headmaster to the pupils are well-realised yet mannequin-like, the only aspect of them that seems stunningly real is their eyes. I think the doll-like quality of the inhabitants of the world adds to the surreal nature of this (literal) fairy tale.Reviews are mixed for this title, simply because it’s not for everyone. If you like traditional adventure games, enjoy slow burning exploration, real storytelling, mystery and appreciate that mindfulness can also be a part of gaming, then this is for you. If you have a short attention-span, and can only appreciate fast-paced, action-based games with instant rewards, or lack imagination then it isn’t for you.I purchased the Collector’s Edition from Japan, which includes the wonderful musical score, and the package resembles one of the old antique books in the game. The spoken language at least is still in English! I also purchased the Move controllers in order to play it, and find, although they take some getting used-to, and organisation of one’s surroundings, after a while using them is quite instinctive.Having played through at least three times, I gained extra insights, heard missed conversations, even found clues I had missed on the first two playthroughs – and if you are as enamoured with the environment, character and story as I was, then this game is thoroughly replayable.
